Electrolysis & Waxing

Electrolysis is the only safe, permanent way to remove unwanted hair. It is a method which has stood the test of time with no side or long-term effects and in the hands of a well qualified practitioner, it will gradually achieve permanent removal. By following the treatment plan devised by the Practitioner, the desired effect will be attained. If there is an underlying medical problem which can cause unwanted hair growth, this must be dealt with by liaising with your GP, as well as undertaking electrolysis.

Electrolysis is the only clinically proven treatment for the removal of unwanted hair.
Although the press is full of adverts for various hair removal methods, they have not been clinically proven. Electrolysis is recognised by the British Medical Association as the only permanent method of removal.

Modern technology, highly polished pre-sterilised disposable probes with infinitely variable currents and an operator who has been trained to meet the demanding standards of the British Association of Electrolysists, make electrolysis the only clinically proven 21st Century treatment for the permanent removal of unwanted hair.

Electrolysis can be used to treat the following areas:
Hairline, eyebrows, sides of face, cheeks, upper lip, chin, shoulders and arms, back and stomach, bikini area, legs, fingers and toes.

WAXING

The Parkland Practice is committed to providing the ultimate in hygienic temporary hair removal following an article which appeared in November 2000 in a national newspaper emphasising the risk of catching HIV and Hepatitis B from poorly trained therapists not employing correct hygiene principles when performing waxing procedures. Environmental Health Inspectors were shocked to find that one in four samples of wax examined was contaminated.

In order to eliminate this risk, at the Parkland Practice, all waxing is carried out with a fresh disposable spatula for each insertion into the wax (not just a new spatula for each area of the face or body) thus eliminating the risk of any cross infection from minute particles of skin or, more importantly, blood contaminating the wax.

The therapist wears disposable latex gloves (or disposable vinyl gloves if a client has a latex allergy) and disposable plastick apron.

In addition the couch is covered in a disposable wax-proof covering with a non-stick surface. Normal skin sanitising takes place both before and after waxing plus the use of soothing antiseptic post-waxing lotion. The practices outlined above form only a part of the normal hygiene procedures in place at The Parkland Practice.

Marylyn Enever is particularly aware of the necessity for impeccable hygiene as she was one of only five therapists nationwide who took part in the standard-setting workshops for the formulation of the National Vocational Qualifications now used in Technical Colleges. She also formulated the hygiene guidelines for the British Association of Electrolysists Ltd

BENEFITS OF ELECTROLYSIS TREATMENT

The First Step Towards Solving the Problem – By sharing your concerns with an experienced professional practitioner such as Marylyn, you will feel that you have taken the first step towards solving the problem.

Individually Tailored Treatment Plan – By following the treatment plan you will see a gradual reduction in the amount of regrowth.

Hairs of any Colour or Strength can be Treated – Unlike other forms of hair removal, hairs of all colouring and strength can be successfully treated. An experienced operator will use the electrolysis method appropriate for the colour and strength of hair being treated.

Improved Appearance – Plucking and shaving the affected area at home inevitably leaves stubble which can create a shadow on the skin. Electrolysis treatment eliminates the hair at the root allowing the softness and smoothness of the skin to be revealed. Without the shadow caused by regrowth, the skin regains its uniform tone and it appears to be more youthful as the light is reflected off smooth skin better.

Time Saved – You will no longer have to spend precious minutes using depilatory products, plucking, shaving or cutting the growth and trying to conceal the blemished area. The ineffective use of home D.I.Y kits will also be unnecessary.

Confidence – The client no longer needs to feel embarrassed about this sensitive condition.

Freedom – Treatment will afford freedom from the need to use cosmetics or clothing to conceal the problem area. Without hair stubble, one no longer has to think twice about being in close contact with others.

Look Your Best For A Holiday, Wedding Or Any Other Special Event - Speak to Marylyn in good time and she will advise you of the amount of time needed to help rejuvenate the area ready for your special occasion.

What Quality of Treatment Can I Expect?

Honest Appraisal of the Condition During the Consultation – Marylyn will give an honest opinion as to whether she is able to treat the condition. If the condition would benefit from more specialised medical treatment, she can offer advice on how best to proceed.

Expertise–Over 30 Years Experience.

Superlative Attention to Hygiene – As Marylyn owns the practice, she personally ensures and takes a pride in maintaining high levels of cleanliness and hygiene. Marylyn used her practical experience of clinical hygiene to update the guidelines issued to members of the B.A.E.

¨ Lever taps, anti-bacterial hand-wash and disposable paper towels are used before giving treatment.
¨ A fresh pair of disposable latex gloves are worn for each treatment.
¨ A pre-sterilised disposable needle for each client.
¨ Disposable paper roll is generously used on headrest and couch.
¨ In essence, everything that comes into contact with the client during treatment is either disposable or has been sterilised.

The above procedures help to ensure that there is no risk of cross infection.

Comfortable Treatment - None of the treatments should feel painful. Any mild discomfort is easily relieved with a topical anaesthesia and/or miniature ice pack.

Knowledge & After Care Advice - Marylyn uses her up to date knowledge to help the client understand what has caused the problem. In many cases, they can also view copies of current research on the subject from reputable and widely acknowledged sources. Post treatment advice is always given regarding care of the treated area and how best to prevent the condition from recurring.

SKIN TAGS & CHERRY ANGIOMA

Skin tags, milia and cherry angioma are aesthetically displeasing but harmless blemishes that detract from the natural smoothness of the skin. They can be treated very successfully with electrical cauterisation using pre-sterilised disposable probes giving an effective yet gentle treatment with no side effects.

What are Skin Tags?
Skin tags are soft, fleshy, benign skin growths that can be found on the neck, armpits, trunk, in body folds and in other areas. They are skin-coloured or sometimes darker and often attached to the skin’s surface by a narrow stalk. Although they can be found at any age, they are mostly found after the age of thirty. Skin tags are normally painless but they can become irritated and inflamed by friction from clothing and jewellery. Their cause is as yet unknown.

What are Milia?
Milia are tiny, hard, white dots located under the upper layer of the skin. They contain solidified sebum from the oil glands and are often found around the eye area, on the cheeks, nose and chin. Opinions are divided as to the cause of milia; some experts believe that they are caused by sun induced changes as the skin ages, others believe use of overly rich skin creams are the cause, whilst other dermatologists maintain that they are simply caused by oily skin or a genetic predisposition towards them. Most individuals experience them at some point in their lifetime.

What are Cherry Angioma?
These harmless bright red or purple spots are pinhead sized, approximately ¼ inch and smooth in texture. They can appear anywhere on the body but they are mainly found on the trunk, particularly from the ages of 35 years. Their cause is unknown but they can be removed gently and effectively.

Removal Method for these Blemishes.
The blemishes listed above can all be safely removed by the gentle application of a mild current with a pre-sterilised disposable probe using advanced skilled techniques designed to gently eradicate the problem.

Benefits of Treatment

The Benefits of Having Skin Tags, Milia or Cherry Angioma Removed:

Improved Appearance - Skin Tags, Milia and Cherry Angioma are all blemishes with a raised surface which create an uneven skin texture and make them impossible to conceal with cosmetics.

Smoothness – Removal will restore a smoother, fresher and more even surface to the skin, making it younger in appearance.

Less Irritation - Skin tags and Cherry Angioma have a tendency to be irritated by the friction of clothing, jewellery and other accessories and may also be caught in zips. Removal of these growths will eliminate this discomfort and anxiety.

Confidence – On the body, removal of skin tags and angioma will give one greater freedom to wear what one wants.

Freedom – Without the self-consciousness caused by body blemishes, one has a wider choice of clothes. Eradication of facial blemishes leaves one free to experiment with cosmetics and update one’s personal ‘look.’

Peace of Mind – It is wise for the individual to refrain from tampering with milia, skin tags or cherry angioma, as infection can arise if the procedure is not performed properly. Thorough skin cleansing before the treatment and the use of sterile instruments is required. Sterilisation necessitates using instruments that are pre-packaged and disposable or have been autoclaved at 126°C for at least ten minutes. Instruments that have been wiped with disinfectant or alcohol are not defined as sterile.

Look your Best for a Holiday, Wedding or any Other Special Event - Speak to Marylyn in good time and she will advise you of the amount of time needed to help rejuvenate the area ready for your special occasion.

Redness of the Skin

Redness of the skin is often caused by annoying but harmless, minor skin blemishes . These can be treated successfully at The Parkland Practice to give a gentle yet effective treatment with no side effects.

What are Thread Veins? They are small areas of visibly dilated blood vessels or capillaries without a feeder vein. The medical name for them is Telangiectasia.

What Causes Them? Very often a tendency towards them is hereditary but certain factors may aggravate the problem:

e caused by excessive exposure to the sun or sunbeds, general weatheringFacial veins can b, rapid changes of temperature and dehydration. Use of topical steroids will thin the skin, making the capillaries more visible, as will smoking. Pressure to the skin caused by heavy spectacles can also aggravate red veins.

Leg veins are more often associated with sauna treatments, standing for long periods of time and habitual crossing of the legs. The hormonal influences of the contraceptive pill, pregnancy and the menopause can exacerbate the condition whilst nutritional disorders, liver problems and circulatory disease may also make one more vulnerable to their development.

What is a Spider Naevus? It is a small raised red area with radiating capillaries giving the appearance of a spider. If you put a little pressure on the central blood vessel, you can obliterate the blemish.

What Causes Naevi to Appear? A common place for a naevus is on the end of the nose and this can be the result of pressure or slight skin damage. Single naevi are extremely common in children. Large numbers can occur during pregnancy when hormone changes take place.

Removal Method for these Blemishes – The blemishes listed above can all be safely removed by gentle application of a mild current with a pre-sterilised disposable probe using skilled advanced techniques designed to gently eradicate the problem.

Benefits of Treatment

Turn Back the Clock – Without redness, one’s skin will regain its even tone and appear to be fresher and more youthful.

Individually Tailored Treatment Plan – By following the treatment plan you will see a reduction in redness with a minimum of disruption to the skin.

Saved Time – Precious minutes will no longer be wasted in applying camouflage to disguise the blemished area on
the face or body

Confidence – Restoring an even tone to the facial skin will make one appear calmer and less flustered. In situations where first impressions are important, people will no longer unfairly interpret your redness as a sign of embarrassment, anxiety or anger. Your complexion will look balanced, leaving you to focus on making an impact.

Without the self-consciousness caused by redness on the body, one has a greater choice of clothes and wider fashion horizons. In the summer months, legs may no longer require hosiery as a disguise.

Freedom – Treatment will afford freedom from the need to use cosmetics to conceal broken veins. Concealing cosmetics often wear off, especially if exposed to water, strenuous activity or if the skin has a tendency to be oily or intolerant. Released from the chore of wearing concealer, clients find that they can feel free to enjoy themselves without constantly checking the difference in the mirror.

Look your Best for a Holiday, Wedding or any Other Special Event – Speak to Marylyn in good time and she will advise you of the amount of time needed to help rejuvenate the area ready for your special occasion.

What is Reflexology?

R
eflexology is a form of alternative medicine that is known to be over 4000 years old and was practised by the Ancient Egyptians and the Chinese.

Reflexology is a form of precise massage that applies pressure to the reflex areas found in the feet and hands, the feet being the more frequently treated. It is based on the principle that there are reflexes or energy channels in the feet which relate to every zone, organ and function in the body. There are ten longitudinal energy zones (five in each foot) with the reflex areas for the right side of the body situated in the right foot and those for the left side situated in the left foot. Each zone ascends from the feet to the top of the head.

In addition to treating conditions that are already present, reflexology can also be used to identify imbalances in the body before physical symptoms occur. The practitioner can then target the corresponding areas in the foot to prevent a potential disorder from developing and to encourage natural healing.

Interest in reflexology in the form of zone therapy was revived in the late 19th century by Dr William Fitzgerald. Whilst working in hospitals in London, Vienna and Paris he discovered that by applying pressure to specific points in the feet, he could establish normal physiological functioning in other parts of the body and use it as an anaesthetic prior to surgery. Eunice Ingham, a physiotherapist in an orthopaedic hospital introduced reflexology, as we now know it, having seen its benefits above the neck. She discovered that not only did it reduce her patients’ perception of pain, but when it was used after surgery, it also accelerated healing and improved mobility.

Doreen Bayly was the main pioneer of reflexology in Great Britain and introduced the therapy in the 1960s, after studying the methods of Eunice Ingham. She established the Bayly School of Reflexology (the teaching organisation of The British Reflexology Assocation.) to ensure continuation of her teaching methods.
The Benefits of Reflexology

R
eflexology can be very beneficial in the following ways:

Healing processes within the body, which may not be functioning at their best, can be stimulated to boost immunity or speed recovery from illness.

Blood circulation improvement will prompt the lymphatic system to eliminate toxins and help to decrease fluid retention. It can also facilitate the transport of essential nutrients around the body. Cardiovascular conditions may also be improved.

Endocrine system complexities such as hormonal imbalances related to menstrual problems, the menopause, infertility and skin conditions can be eased whilst thyroid imbalances can improve and glucose levels can be normalised.

Respiratory system difficulties such as hay fever, asthma and sinusitus can be relieved.

Digestive system disorders such as indigestion, ulcers, gallstones and I.B.S can be alleviated.

Urinary system ailments including cystitis and pain from renal colic may be improved and blood pressure, which is related to renal function, can also be rebalanced by the treatment.

Stress-related problems in general, should improve to encourage restful sleep and provide relief from headaches, muscle tension, irritability, fatigue and allergic reactions.

In addition to specific health benefits, a sense of calm, wellbeing, and heightened awareness are cited by many as a direct result of reflexology, giving the patient a feeling of deep contentment.

The fact that several teaching hospitals now use reflexology in their physical medical departments is further evidence of its acceptance in traditional medical spheres and the benefits of the treatment.
The Treatment

B
efore undertaking the initial treatment, I will take a detailed medical history to enable me to pinpoint the main disorders and to eliminate any contra-indications which could affect the outcome of the massage.

Length of the Treatment - The first treatment will take approximately an hour including the consultation. Each treatment thereafter will last approximately 45 minutes.

Use of a Specialised Reflexology Chair - The patient rests in a low reclining chair specified by the British Reflexology Association to free spinal pressure and promote deep relaxation. A massage couch with raised head and foot areas will not allow for a relaxing treatment as the muscles of the body are not adequately relaxed therefore reducing the positive effects of the treatment.

The Treatment - Massage is applied to the reflex areas on the feet by means of firm pressure using the thumbs and fingers. As the session progresses, unbalanced reflex zones relating to specific areas of the body may be identified, sometimes feeling tender to the patient. Areas in the feet can feel gritty, swollen or fibrous and their colour and temperature will also play a part in revealing an indication of the health of the feet and thus the body. The extent of tenderness will reflect the degree of imbalance in the part of the body corresponding to that particular reflex. Sensitivity of the feet varies amongst people but as a trained practitioner, I will know the correct pressure to apply and how to interpret the sensations felt

How Many Reflexology Treatments are Necessary? In order to gain the maximum benefit and see an improvement in condition, it is recommended that the patient has at least six sessions. The number and frequency of sessions will however depend on the severity and type of disorders present. The frequency of treatment depends on the condition, but it is usually once weekly.

How Will I Feel After the Treatment? As well as being a deeply relaxing experience, a course of treatments will help to rebalance the body’s functioning, alleviate stress, improve nerve functioning and facilitate circulation and healing.
